Minutes and a Simple Breast Self Exam Could Save Your Life
If you're a woman age 20 or older, pick one day a month, such as the first or last day of the month, to schedule a breast self exam (BSE). Select a day that won't fall during your period, because your breasts may be tender. Then, follow these three easy steps recommended by the American Cancer Society:

1. Lie down with your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, place the pads of your three middle fingers on your right breast. Use small circular motions to feel the breast tissue. Use three levels of pressure: light pressure to feel tissue close to the skin's surface; medium pressure to feel a bit deeper; and firm pressure to feel tissue close to your chest and ribs. Check the entire breast in an up and down pattern, going up until you feel the collar bone and going down, below the breast, until you feel your ribs. Repeat this procedure on your left breast.

2. Stand in front of a mirror with your hands on your hips. Look for changes in breast size, contour or dimpling compared to the previous month.

3. Check your underarms. With your right arm raised slightly, use your left hand to feel your underarm tissue. Repeat on the left side.

If you notice changes in the feel or look of your breasts or underarm tissue, contact your physician promptly – even if you think the change is slight. It could save your life.
